Rho Theta History

On January 13, 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was established by 22 outstanding and courageous women in the Nation’s capital of Washington, DC on the campus of Howard University.

The Rho Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., started its Charter date with the National Sorority on May 5, 1991 and subsequently established its Charter Chapter on the campus of Appalachian State University; (ASU) on May 6, 1991.

The Charter Members included:

  • Adrienne Davis
  • Monica Davis – President
  • Angela Fuqua
  • Wanjiru Ikua
  • Angela Lewis – Treasurer
  • Lisha Moore – Secretary
  • Dayo Phoenix
  • Tammie Telaine Tolbert
  • Cynthia White – Vice President

The establishment of the Charter Chapter of Rho Theta of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was brought to the campus of Appalachian State University through the desire, diligence and persistence of its Charter Members aforementioned.

In the fall of 1990 this group of determined and scholastically qualified young women began working together to bring Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated to the campus of Appalachian State University.

All 11 women held the necessary scholastic GPA requirements, obtained the required financial requirements and participated in and completed the required community service activities, i.e., Adopt-A-Street.

The aforementioned 11 young women brought a tremendous amount of leadership skills to the Rho Theta Charter Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

Notable historic achievements of charter members at Appalachian State include, Charter Member, Tammie Telaine Tolbert, served as the Black Student Association President at Appalachian State University for 2 consecutive years and was paramount in helping to establish important cultural needs and necessities for African American students on campus including the implementation of the all Black Entertainment Television Station; BET.  Wanjuru Ikua was responsible for the completion of the National PanHellenic Council (NPHC) at ASU.

  • Angela Lewis pursued a degree in Psychology
  • Lesley Barnett pursued a degree in Politcal Science
  • Tammie Tolbert pursued a degree in Mass Communications with a concentration in Journalism
  • Monica Davis pursued a degree in Nutrition and Health
  • Adrienne Davis pursued a degree in Business Management, Dayo Phoenix pursued a degree in Early Child Development
  • Lisha Moore pursued a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting
  • Angela Fuqua pursued a degree in Biology
  • Wanjuru Ikua pursued a degree in International Business Administration
  • Cynthia White pursued a degree in Music industries Study

These young women had already began to leave a legacy of strength and fortitude before they even chartered the Rho Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. In knowing the fortitude and strength of the Founding Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and how they stressed and personified Education, Philanthropy, Sisterhood and Scholastic Achievement, These 11 young women at ASU were ready and determined to bring Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., to the campus of Appalachian State University.

Because of these 11 young women’s tenacity, persistence and perseverance along with the help and guidance of the Gastonia Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and their Campus Advisor Mrs. Jeter, the 11 Charter Members established the Rho Theta Charter Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated at Appalachian State University.

They were intelligent, diligent and determined young women who wanted to bring a sorority to ASU that helped other young women to grow into strong, intelligent, professional and successful young women. They wanted to enhance and improve the way of life of the women in the chapter by giving them a sense of purpose and self-worth like the 22 Founders of Delta Sigma Theta, Sorority Inc. did for so many other young women on campuses of colleges and universities worldwide.
